The Maori people of New Zealand speak of the future as being behind us because we cannot see it. The past is what is in front of us, we see the recent past plainly, the more distant on the horizon. We cannot say what the future will hold for us but we can look at the past in front of us and see the way that we have come like a line on a map and that may give us the direction we are going in.
